Directions to the Baroness Erlanger Hospital

The main campus is just east of Downtown Chattanooga. These directions are the easiest to follow for out-of-town visitors. There are a dozen different ways to get to Erlanger, however there are no shortcuts. Alternate routes are used to circumvent traffic problems (we have our fair share). Call your primary contact at Erlanger to see if there is any highway construction that you'll need to avoid.
• From the Airport
  1. Take Shepherd Road to the Hwy. 153 overpass. Turn left onto Hwy. 153 North.
  2. Continue North until you come to the Amnicola Hwy exit [aka Hwy 58 South, which also becomes Riverside Drive]. Take the second exit, the one that is just after you go under the overpass.
  3. Once you are on Amnicola Hwy., go about five miles. There will be an exit ramp on the right hand side. There is a sign indicating that this exit is for 3rd Street and Erlanger Hospital. When you take this exit, stay in the leftmost lane.
  4. Take the first left (i.e., south) onto Mabel Street.
  5. At the second light turn left onto East 4th Street (i.e., east). Immediately get into the middle or right lane. East 4th merges into East Third. [Note: although the first light is at the intersection of East Third, the street at that point is one-way and leads away from Erlanger. Don't turn at this first light].
  6. After going up a slight hill, the first stop light will be at the Hampton Street Intersection. The large red brick buildings on your left are the main campus. The buildings on your right are the Fillauer and Whitehall buildings, which house the administrative departments of Erlanger (including the Technology Management Division, Human Resources, Payroll, etc.).
• From I-75 (South/Atlanta)
  1. Head north on I-75 until you come to the I-24 split. Take I-24 West to Downtown Chattanooga.
  2. After the ridge cut, you will descend into the Chattanooga Valley (a pretty view on a clear night). I-24 West splits (exit 178), with the right lanes going to Downtown Chattanooga via Highway 27 (aka I-124, aka Corridor J).
  3. Take the 4th Street exit (Exit 1C) and continue east until you arrive at the Erlanger campus.
     • Warning: The left lane of 4th Street becomes a left-turn-only lane at the Georgia Avenue intersection. Stay to the right until after you pass this point.
     • Warning: The right lane of 4th Street becomes a right-turn-only lane at the Mabel Street intersection. When 4th Street widens after the Houston Street intersection, stay in the middle lane.
     • Warning: The left lane of 4th Street splits off to becomes a left-turn-only lane after the Mabel Street intersection. Stay in the middle or right lanes.
  4. After Mabel Street you will go up a slight hill. Then the first stop light will be at the Hampton Street Intersection. The large red brick buildings on your left are the main campus. The buildings on your right are the Fillauer and Whitehall buildings, which house the administrative departments of Erlanger (including the Technology Management Division, Human Resources, Payroll, etc.).
• From I-75 (North/Knoxville)
  1. Head south on I-75 until you come to the I-24 split. Take I-24 West to Downtown Chattanooga.

• From I-24 (West/Nashville) (Also from I-59 South/Huntsville, Alabama to I-24 Eastbound)
  1. Head east on I-24 until you come to Chattanooga.
  2. I-24 splits at Exit 147 to Highway 27 (aka I-124, aka Corridor J) to Downtown Chattanooga. Stay in the left lane of this exit.
  3. Take the 4th Street exit (Exit 1C) and continue east until you arrive at the Erlanger campus.
     • Warning: The left lane of 4th Street becomes a left-turn-only lane at the Georgia Avenue intersection. Stay to the right until after you pass this point.
     • Warning: The right lane of 4th Street becomes a right-turn-only lane at the Mabel Street intersection. When 4th Street widens after the Houston Street intersection, stay in the middle lane.

• From Downtown Chattanooga
  Erlanger Medical Center can be reached from downtown either via East 4th Street or M.L. King Jr. Blvd.

  If you take East 4th Street:

  1. Take the 4th Street and continue east until you arrive at the Erlanger campus.
     • Warning: The left lane of 4th Street becomes a left-turn-only lane at the Georgia Avenue intersection. Stay to the right until after you pass this point.
     • Warning: The right lane of 4th Street becomes a right-turn-only lane at the Mabel Street intersection. When 4th Street widens after the Houston Street intersection, stay in the middle lane.

  If you take M.L. King Jr. Blvd.:

  1. Take M.L. King Jr. Blvd. east until you come to the Central Avenue intersection.
  2. Turn left (i.e., north) onto Central Avenue until you come to the East Third Street intersection.
  3. Turn left (i.e., west) onto East Third Street. The large red brick buildings on your right are the main campus. Continue to the next block and the buildings on your left are the Whitehall and Fillauer buildings, which house the administrative departments of Erlanger (including the Technology Management Division, Human Resources, Payroll, etc.).

Finding the Technology Management Division

• TMD Main Department
          TMD is located in the Fillauer building on the south side of East Third Street at the corner of Hampton. The building is a Pepto-Bismol shade of pink and the TMD entrance is the furthest from Hampton. If you get to the Erlanger Credit Union's door, you've gone one door too far. The TMD entrance is double glass doors, inset from the sidewalk. The receptionist will need to let you in since the inner doors are secured.
• Computer Operations & Network Group
          The Computer Operations Center and the network technicians are located in the basement of the Whitehall building. This building is on the south side of East Third Street at the corner of Wiehl Street. You can enter the building from the main door that opens onto East Third Street on the first floor, from the rear of the building on the second floor, or from the parking garage behind the Whitehall building via the catwalk on the fourth floor.
          Take the elevator to the "T" level (Tunnel Level). The door to operations is right off the elevator lobby. Press the doorbell and wait for someone in operations to activate the door: you will hear a buzzing that indicates that the door is unlocked. Once inside, please put your name and the time on the sign-in sheet at the front desk.
• Were to Park
  • Whitehall Parking Garage
            The parking garage is behind the Whitehall building and it is reached from East Third Street. The entrance lies in the middle of the south side of the street, between Hampton and Wiehl streets. The entrance can be hard to see, because it is a small alley between the Whitehall building and the Erlanger Credit Union. You will see two allies: take the wide alley that is covered (the narrow, uncovered alley leads to the credit union's parking lot.
            There are three situations under which you can park in the garage for free. First, parking is free if you spend less than thirty minutes in the garage. You can also park for free if you leave after regular business hours (the parking attendant leaves about seven o'clock). If you are on official business at Erlanger, the TMD departmental secretaries can validate your parking stub so you can park for free.
            Most of the parking spaces in the lot between the back of the Whitehall building and the garage are reserved. However, there is one loading space. You can also park in this area after business hours (about five o'clock). This lot is reached via the same alley as the parking garage.
  • Secondary Parking
    These locations are available after business hours. Some can also be used for short visits if you can find an opening. They will ticket you if you use these locations for long term parking during business hours.
  • Fillauer Parking Lot
            Free parking is available behind the Fillauer building. The entrance to this lot is from Hampton Street. During business hours, you'll be hard pressed to find a spot, but it might be worth a drive-by to see if one of the unreserved spaces are open.
  • Erlanger Credit Union Parking Lot
            After business hours and during bank holidays you can park in the credit union's (tiny) parking lot. The credit union is located on the south side of East Third Street in the middle of the block (between Wiehl and Hampton streets). The lot is reached via the narrow alley running alongside the credit union. Since there are two allies, take the uncovered (the wider, covered alley leads to the parking garage and Whitehall lot).
  • Student Parking Lot
            When the CSTCC School of Nursing is not in session, this lot is empty, and there shouldn't be any objection to your parking there. This lot is behind the Fillauer building on the south side of East 4th Street. Take Hampton Street to the top of the hill where there is a stop sign. If you look directly ahead, you will see a driveway that leads up, behind employee parking lot #8.
