It was long overdue, but 02.02.2000 was the perfect time to finally do a picture for my son's (Harrison Blake Edward Given's) birthday. Instead of the "K for Kari" approach, where everything was based on the letter K, this is a collection of Harrison's favorite subjects. He's a lot like me when I was his age, and he loves bugs, animals, science fiction, mystical beings, and creatures of the imagination. He's an artist, too, and draws Pokémon, aliens, dinosaurs, and magical creatues. The above image is the finished work. Below are the studies and the final work in various stages of development.
01.06.2000 The above image is a pencil study in preparation for target work. The final piece was rendered on Bristol board with ink, and colored pencils (Primsacolor, Verithin, and Derwent).
01.13.2000 Final version of the study. I replaced the robot in the center of the H with a cobra (probably Harrison's favorite creature) because it was a confusing image. A simpler robot takes his place in the lower right corner. The lizard in the same corner has been adjusted so that he doesn't look so "froggy." New elements include a dragon fly (center), rhino beetle (upper right), monkey, crab, and bouncey "thingy" (all lower left), and a mysterious artifact (lower right). The next step is to transfer the study onto bristol board and inking the outlines and solid blacks.
01.17.2000 I had a long weekend, so I was able to finish the inking today. You'll notice a few last minute changes to the composition. I scanned the original at 300dpi so that I could print copies to use for coloring experiments.
