Translate Logos TVM Numbers to Abbreviations

Logos Research System's excellent software allows you to export or paste Scripture passages to word processors. For example, I find it helpful to export the KJV text (which has the Strong's and Tense/Voice/Mood [TVM] numbers embedded). Then I can print the document with a huge margin and double spaced so that I can annotate, mark, highlight, etc. during an in-depth study. However, TVM numbers are extremely difficult to work with. There needs to be a better way to use Logo's TVM in exported form — other than memorizing the meaning of 150+ numeric codes!

To solve this problem, I wrote a macro for Microsoft Word that translates the TVM numbers into easily recognizable abbreviations. After the TVM numbers have been imported into MS Word, I run this macro and the number 5720, for example, becomes "Pres.Act.Imp." (Present Active Imperative).

In addition to recognizability, the macro improves readability. Since the Greek verbs I want to stand out the most are those in the imperative mood, this macro formats all imperative mood verbs in bold. Readers with a technical bent could modify my macro to color code TVM abbreviations for special projects.

To download the source code for the macro, right-click the icon below and select "Save Target As..." To view the source code of the macro, left-click the icon instead.

I've tested this in Microsoft Word '97 (of Office 97) and Word 2002 (of Office XP). The instructions below are for the '97 version, so there may be a slight variation with other versions. You will need to download the TVMXLAT.BAS file (see above) and remember where it was downloaded on your computer.

1. Select Tools on the main menu bar.
2. Select Macro from the Tools drop down menu.
3. Select Macros... from the Macro menu.
4. The Macro dialog will display.
5. Enter TVMxlat in the Macro name field.
6. You can optionally enter an explanation of the macro's function in the Description field.
7. Click the Create button.
8. The Microsoft Visual Basic module editor will open.
9. If not already in position, you must move the cursor to a blank line between the macro declaration (the line reading "Sub TVMxlat()" and the end of the macro (the line reading "End Sub").
10. Select Insert on the main menu bar.
11. Select Insert on the main menu bar.
12. Select File... from the Insert drop down menu.
13. Change the Files of type to "Basic Files (*.bas)"
14. Locate the copy of TVMXLAT.BAS that you downloaded, select it, and click the Open button.
15. The macro will contain a duplicate "Sub" statement at the top of the macro, so delete the line that says "Sub MAIN()"
16. The macro will contain a duplicate "End Sub" at the bottom of the macros, so delete the "End Sub" line.
17. Select File on the main menu bar.
18. Select Close and Return to Microsoft Word from the File drop down menu.
19. You no longer need the TVMXLAT.BAS file that you downloaded, and it can be deleted from your hard drive if you desire.

You will first need a MS Word document containing the TVM numbers. In Logos highlight the desired text and copy it. Switch over to Microsoft Word and paste the text. This is the only way I've found that works (at least that's how it's been with version 2.1f and earlier). Exporting from Logos or using "Insert Verses" from MS Word does not include the TVM numbers.

Now that the TVM numbered text is in MS Word, run the macro:

1. Move your cursor to the beginning of the document.
2. Select Tools on the main menu bar.
3. Select Macro from the Tools drop down menu.
4. Select Macros... from the Macro menu.
5. The Macro dialog will display.
6. Find and then highlight the TVMxlat macro in the macro list.
7. Click the Run button.
8. The macro may take a little while to do its job, especially if you're doing a huge passage (e.g., an entire book).

If you run the macro regularly, you could assign it to a toolbar icon, but that's a lesson for another day.
